This beautiful 17th Century Flemish tapestry came from a private collection in Milan, Italy. The piece dates to 1650 and is in excellent condition. Its fibers were all intricately stitched by hand to depict a Roman scene of soldiers offering a woman, jewels, gold and wine to Julius Caesar, most likely after a battle. The piece is made of wool warp and weft, with silk inlay throughout. The silk fibers are used to naturally highlight the delicate effects of the piece. The sheen of the silk thread gives the piece luminosity and dimensionality. The depth of the tapestry can be felt as the viewer looks deeper to find additional images within the work, such as a man with a horse in the distance.
